EV Comparison: 2019 Chevrolet Bolt vs Hyundai Kona EV
We’re an odd pair, don’t you think, Clayton, to be testing two mid-priced, fairly smallish, hardly-scintillating electric hatchbacks. After all, the Tesla forums have me pegged as a supercar-driving troglodyte who drinks fossil fuel for breakfast, while you, my young anachronism, drive a, what is it, 1959 Chevrolet Suburban only slightly smaller — and thirstier — than an Abrams tank.
And yet, I enjoyed both these cars. Oh, the whole EV thing isn’t quite sorted out — the range issue, especially the greatly diminished range that accompanies Canadian winters, still worries — but, overall, these two EVs are amazingly well sorted. They’re mostly silent, well torquey off the line and, most importantly, useable, everyday transportation. As a second car in the family — one that will not be used for my monthly Toronto-to-Ottawa sprints in the middle of winter — they make a lot of sense.
